Finish Carpentry and Trim Work in Missoula, Montana

Baseboard, casing, crown, wainscot, built-ins and stair parts fitted by carpenters who scribe to wavy old plaster instead of hiding gaps under a bead of caulk. Paint-grade or stain-grade, matched to the age of your house.

Finish carpentry is the part of a remodel you look at every day, and it is the part that separates a crew that builds from a crew that manages subcontractors. Constructive Brothers keeps trim in house. Our carpenters cope inside corners on baseboard rather than mitering them, back-bevel casing so the reveal stays even on out-of-square jambs, and scribe every piece to walls that were plastered by hand in 1915 and have not been flat since. On older homes in the University District, the Northside and the Slant Streets we match existing profiles, sometimes by having a knife ground at a local mill, so the new work in a kitchen or addition does not announce itself.

The same care goes into newer houses in Miller Creek and Grant Creek, where builder-grade MDF trim and hollow doors are often the first thing owners want replaced. We install solid-core doors hung on three hinges, poplar or fir casing for paint, and clear vertical-grain fir or white oak where the wood will be stained. Built-ins are designed around what you actually store: a mudroom bench with boot cubbies sized for winter gear, or bookshelves that carry the crown line around the room. Every piece is fastened with an 18-gauge or 15-gauge nailer into studs or blocking, then filled and sanded for paint.

Trim packages for a whole house in Missoula usually land between $6,000 and $25,000, with built-ins adding $3,500 to $12,000 per piece, and the cost is driven mostly by stain-grade versus paint-grade wood, the number of doors and how much old trim needs matching.

Why Us

Why Missoula Homeowners Choose Us for Finish Carpentry & Trim

Scribed to real walls

Old plaster and even new drywall are never truly flat. We scribe baseboard to the floor and casing to the wall so the joint closes without a fat bead of caulk, which matters on stain-grade fir where caulk cannot hide anything.

Profiles that match the house

A 1920s Craftsman bungalow wants 5-inch flat casing with a back band, and a 1960s ranch wants something simpler. We match what is already there or source period-appropriate profiles, and for historic homes we can have a custom knife made to reproduce the original.

Built-ins sized for Montana life

Skis, boots, dog gear and river stuff take space. We design mudroom benches, closet systems and pantry shelving around the things a Missoula family actually owns, build them from plywood and hardwood rather than particleboard, and install them level even when the floor is not.

Doors that close

We hang doors so they latch without slamming and stay put when opened halfway, which means plumb jambs, shimmed hinges and a strike set for the actual gap. Pre-hung or slab, interior or exterior, we treat every door like the moving part it is.

Our Process

How a Finish Carpentry & Trim Project Runs

Walk-through and samples

We look at the existing trim, note what stays and what goes, and bring profile samples so you can see a 3.5-inch versus a 5.25-inch baseboard against your wall before anything is ordered.

Itemized quote

The quote lists every room, the linear feet of each profile, door counts and any built-ins as separate line items, so you can trim the scope yourself if the number needs to come down.

Material acclimation and install

Wood sits in your house for several days before we cut it, because Missoula's dry winter air shrinks trim that was stored in a damp warehouse. Then we install room by room with the shop set up on site.

Fill, sand and paint-ready

Nail holes get filled and sanded flush, and caulk goes only where caulk belongs. We can paint or stain it ourselves, or hand it off to your painter ready to go.

FAQs

Finish Carpentry & Trim Questions, Answered

What is the difference between paint-grade and stain-grade trim?
Paint-grade trim is usually poplar, finger-jointed pine or primed MDF, and the finish hides the joints and fills. It costs less and is the right choice for most painted rooms. Stain-grade trim is clear fir, white oak, alder or similar hardwood where every joint shows, so it takes more time to fit and the material costs two to four times as much. Most older Missoula homes have stained fir in the original rooms and painted trim in later additions.
Can you match the original trim in my old Missoula house?
In most cases, yes. Common profiles from the 1900s through the 1940s are still available from regional millwork suppliers, and where they are not, a mill can grind a custom knife from a sample of your existing casing for a modest setup fee. The usual approach is to pull one piece and use it as the template, so the new kitchen doorway looks like it was always there.
Do you build custom built-ins and closets?
Yes. Mudroom benches with cubbies, floor-to-ceiling bookcases, window seats, pantry shelving, fireplace surrounds and closet systems are all built from cabinet-grade plywood and solid hardwood face frames. We design around your measurements and what you need to store, then finish to match the room's trim. Budget roughly $3,500 to $12,000 per built-in depending on size and whether it is painted or stained.
How long does trim work take?
A single room with new baseboard and casing is usually a day or two. A whole-house trim package on a 1,800 square foot home runs one to two weeks, plus a few days up front for the wood to acclimate to your house. Built-ins add time depending on complexity. We give you a schedule with the quote and stick to it, since the same two or three carpenters stay on your job until it is done.
